Fire Prevention | Print |

The best way to prevent a fire emergency is to be prepared.

You can do some simple things like storing flammable liquids in proper containers, keeping areas clean & free of trash and ensuring that combustibles away from sources of heat.

Install sufficient smoke detectors, prepare & practice an escape plan, use candles safely and have the right fire extinguishers available.

When cooking, stay in the kitchen to monitor any risks of cooking fires. For additional information on “How to Stop Cooking Fires Before they Happen”, visit Health Canada’s site to print off a copy of the article.

Should a fire break out, you should first notify the fire department & sound the fire alarm. Then assist people who need help escaping the fire. And if you safely can, attempt to extinguish the fire with the properly rated fire extinguisher.

Your decision to fight the fire will be based on a few key safety factors. One, that the containment and size of the fire is manageable. And that you always have an escape route and you’re not exposed to any toxic fumes or smoke.

And remember this … before you open a door, feel if it is hot. If it is, use a different exit.
