Most of us enjoy candles. They exude a warm mood and are relaxing while providing a nice gentle source of light. Most candles are reasonably priced and accessible.
But in some cases, candles can be anything but inexpensive or gentle.
Candle safety is just as important, as breathing. The moment we stop paying attention to the use of candles, we risk loosing everything.
Like breathing, we must never neglect or leave a burning candle. If an unattended burning candle is too close to a fuel source, you may not have time to prevent the fire from escalating into a serious fire emergency.
Not to mention, that the play of children and pets may accidentally initiate a fire.
Some common sense measures include:
- Use a nonflammable base below the candles
- Cut wicks down to approx. ¼” before igniting
- Use a candle safe holder
- Confirm that the candle is tightly seated & balanced
- Keep the melted wax clean of non-wax materials
- Don’t place candles near vents or other drafty areas
- Don’t lean over candles … think about clothing & hair
- Don’t move burning candles, extinguish them first
- Use a candle snuffer to extinguish them
- Make sure they’re extinguished
