The Athens Fire Department takes training seriously.
We want every member, recent or veteran, to achieve the best fire fighting skills they possibly can.
These are skills that can be applied every day. Not only to help the community, but to ensure the long term health and safety of our fire fighters for their families.
Therefore, fire fighting training is an on-going concern, with lessons from the past, contributing to today’s standards. Our members receive periodic training in various discipline areas.
Basic skills include an understanding of ropes, knots, ground ladders and extrication and rescue. Training continues on with fundamental tools, such as portable extinguishers, fire hoses and firefighter personal protective equipment.
From there, training covers fire behavior and control. Fire prevention also involves educating the public with respect to fire detection, home alarms and business suppression systems.
Every firefighter learns the ABC’s of proper fire department communications. Loss control and forcible entry are subjects equally of concern to every home and business owner.
Overall, firefighters receive clear orientation and safety when they first get started.
