An ERP will identify a plan of action “in the event of” or “in response to” to a significant emergency event or disaster.
Disasters or emergencies may involve fires, toxic gas release, chemical spills, explosions, personal injuries, natural disasters or even terrorism and riots.
The ERP will therefore outline several key components that will assist the community in surviving day to day challenges of an emergency, along with long term plans for recuperation.
Key areas include:
- Policies with respect to emergency management
- Preparing for a disaster
- Initiating an emergency response
- Public warning systems
- Community disaster assistance
- Management teams to oversee the incident
- Housing facilities
- Wrapping up the emergency response
- List of disaster & resource contacts
The Emergency Management Act, 2003 requires that all Ontario communities provide a program for educating the public. This would include an overview of how to be prepared for an emergency and what to expect from the government with respect to an event.
