If you have been a victim of a fire, you may have thought to yourself, and likely more than once, “… if only I had done this …”.
You know what we mean.
With all your efforts to do your best to maintain a fire safe environment at home and at the work place, accidents do happen.
The point is this. You should document your critical assets to minimize loss and to speed up the return to a normal lifestyle.
Insurance companies are more likely to expedite the fulfillment of a claim, when there is no doubt to the magnitude of loss.
For example, you could document your key possessions and documents with photography. Then you would safely store a copy of the photographs at a remote location, like a bank vault or someone else’s home.
With some insurance companies, they will even request a photo of key belongings prior to issuing insurance. So why wait.
From time to time, you would then continue to add or to update this remote file. Then, should a serious fire destroy your home, you will have tangible documentation.
In a sense, you would have 20-20 vision. Just ask anyone who’s lost their Birth Certificate, Driver’s License, Passport, Social Insurance Card, Health Card and so on.
You might consider investing into a fire proof safe that is rated for at least (1) hour at 1700 Fahrenheit. This could give you the best chance at recovering your key documents once the fire is safely extinguished.
You get the picture.
